Atiq Ahmed, a mafia don who had established a reign of terror in Prayagraj, was assassinated in a flash on live television despite being escorted by a sizable police detachment and in full view of the media.
The mafia don’s 40-year reign came to an end with the deaths of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed, who had been responsible for a number of high-profile killings over the years.

The legend around Pooja Pal’s curse first surfaced in 2004, the year Atiq Ahmed won the Lok Sabha elections from Prayagraj. Prayagraj West’s assembly seat has also become vacant. When this seat was up for a by-election in 2005, Atiq Ahmed ran his brother Ashraf.
On behalf of the BSP, Raju Pal ran against Ashraf Ahmed in the election and won. A member of Atiq Ahmed’s family had never before had to concede defeat.
A few days after being elected as an MLA, Raju Pal wed Pooja Pal. In the meantime, Raju Pal’s death was being planned by Atiq family. In order to assassinate Raju Pal, Atiq assigned his brother Ashraf Ahmed the duty.

Pooja Pal reportedly cursed Atiq Ahmed and his family since Raju Pal was killed after nine days of marriage. Nobody in Atiq Ahmed’s family likely anticipated that Pooja Pal’s curse would affect them so severely.
Pooja Pal was sobbing and stated, “God will one day punish Atiq and his henchmen for what they did to my husband.” It took another 18 years for this curse to manifest.

Raju Pal’s widow Pooja Pal took up his legacy after he was killed. After Raju Pal’s murder, the assembly seat was vacant. By-elections for this seat were conducted a short while afterwards. Pooja Pal ran during this time on a BSP ticket against Ashraf Ahmed but lost.
Assembly elections were conducted once more in 2007, and Pooja Pal won on a BSP ticket for the first time. After that, Pooja Pal beat Atiq again in the 2012 assembly elections, this time running for the Apna Dal.
Pooja Pal, a member of the Gaderia community, was expelled by the BSP in January 2018 due to allegations of disobedience. Additionally, there were rumours that she could join the BJP. She is now her party’s candidate from Unnao, according to the SP.
