Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the disgraced health technology company Theranos, arrived at the federal prison in Texas on Tuesday to begin her 11 years, 3 months-long term for her role in a blood-testing scam that became a metaphor for Silicon Valley’s hubris and greed.

Holmes, 39, was spotted entering the federal women’s prison camp in Bryan, Texas, while wearing jeans and a brown jumper and grinning as she spoke with two escorting prison staff members, according to AP.
The “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” star Jennifer Shah, who was sentenced earlier this year to 6 and 1/2 years in prison for defrauding thousands of people in a years-long telemarketing scam, would be one of up to 720 white-collar, non-violent female offenders.

The jail camp, according to The Guardian, “lacks the fencing and strict rules of higher-security prisons.” According to the Wall Street Journal, her prison cell had a “open entrance” with no bars or doors.
The majority of federal prison camps don’t even have fences, and they contain inmates who the Bureau of Prisons deems to pose the least threat to security. The prison camps frequently have low personnel levels, and many of the inmates there labour in prisons.
Elizabeth Holmes said she couldn’t even fully pay her lawyers after being forced to pay $452 million in reparations to the rich investors she duped.
Inmates who are allowed to work at FPC Bryan can expect to make between 12 cents and $1.15 per hour in their job duties, which include working in Federal Prison Industries’ factories and providing food services. According to a legal expert, she will be making roughly $6 per month, with half going to her victims.
A son born in July 2021, only a few weeks before the start of Holmes’ trial, and a three-month-old girl, who was born after a jury found her guilty on four felony counts of fraud and conspiracy in January 2022, are the two young children Holmes is leaving behind.
Every weekend they are allowed to visit their mother, and kids under 10 are allowed to sit on their mom’s lap.
