On June 9, “Vulga r,” the first song produced by Madonna and Sam Smith, will be released.
Madonna and Sam Smith “Vulgar”
Madona announced the release on social media on Wednesday morning by posting the single’s cover art. The image is a side-by-side black-and-white shot of two corsets with the initials of both Smith and Madona — appropriately: “S&M” — written across the image.
Madona captioned the photo with the phrase “VULGA R…………. new song out Friday June 9th @samsmith.”

Last week, Smith teased the project on Twitter by playing a tape of the pair repeating their names: “Sam and Madonn.” Following the initial teaser, Smith also tweeted that fans would have a surprise at his Manchester performance on May 24. Since the Twitter announcement used the same font as the initial teaser, many assumed it would be the first taste of the collaboration.
However, when the actual performance day arrived, Smith was forced to suddenly end the performance owing to vocal problems.
Prior to the buildup, Smith recently covered Madona’s 1994 single “Human Nature” during their London leg on the “Gloria” tour. They sang the ballad in knee-high boots and bejewelled pasties, giving it a considerably more gritty rendering. The songwriting duo performed their Grammy-winning single “Unholy,” which is found on Smith’s “Gloria” album, together at the 2023 Grammys, where Madona introduced Kim Petras and Smith.
Before the performers took the stage for the No. 1 single performance with a devil theme, Madona posed the question to the audience, “Are you ready for a little controversy?”
I feel overjoyed, appreciative, and motivated. I appreciate your love and encouragement, @madona. Later that evening, Smith captioned a photo on Instagram, “I’ll never forget your kindness.”
