Berlin One woman was murdered and another was taken to the hospital by neighbours after an early-morning home explosion in Berlin, Massachusetts.
The deceased woman was thought to be in her 80s. According to the fire chief, as the fire spread, neighbours flocked to the scene to take pieces of the woman’s roof off her. She has non-life-threatening injuries and is being treated at a hospital in stable condition.

Berlin Fire Chief Michael McQuillen praised the neighbours’ efforts, calling them “heroic” for being able to enter, take it up, and free the woman from behind it. “At that time, the fire was spreading swiftly; every second counts. was undoubtedly a part in keeping her alive and sparing her life.
At around 3:30 in the morning, according to McQuillen, first responders were summoned to the 2.5-story wood frame house on Pleasant Street due to reports of a house explosion.

It’s very much been levelled out, he added. “When we got there, there wasn’t really anything standing except for a debris pile because when it exploded it came down upon itself.”
Materials could be seen hanging from the trees above the site of the former house, according to McQuillen, who said that there was a “large debris field” left behind from the explosion.

Later in the morning, firefighters were still knocking out hotspots. Other residences sustained minor damage as a result of flying debris.
The cause of the fire is still being looked into and was not immediately revealed.
