Tigres With a 5-0 hammering of Honduran team Motagua on Thursday, Mexico’s Tigres UANL secured their spot in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals thanks to two goals from Andre-Pierre Gignac.
At the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, Tigre s won 6-0 overall with to goals from ex-France international attacker Gignac in each half.
The 2020 tournament champion Tigres will face fellow Liga-MX team Leon in the semifinals.
Gignac scores twice as Tigres advance
Tigre s’ outstanding recent performance in the CONCACAF Champions League, the premier regional club tournament for clubs from Central America, North America, and the Caribbean, continues with the triumph.
The club not only made it to the championship final three years ago but also in 2016, 2017, and 2019.
Gignac, who scored the game-winning goal in Tigres’ championship victory three years prior, was the Mexican team’s talisman once more in Thursday’s victory.
On minute 27, the 37-year-old took a low shot from just beyond the penalty area and coolly bent it into the bottom corner to give Tigres a 2-0 advantage overall.

Due to Motagua’s limited offensive capabilities, Tigre s was able to patiently wait for opportunities and secure the tie with another Gignac goal halfway through the second half.
Rafael Carioca lofted a pass to the Frenchman from a free kick that he took close to the halfway line, catching the Motagua defence off guard.
Gignac’s first move allowed him to elude Jonathan Rougier, the opposing custodian, and he had the easiest of finishes to make it 2-0.
On minute 83, veteran Colombian Luis Quinones made it 3-0 by bending a left-foot drive from the edge of the box into the top corner.
Jesus Angulo scored a fourth goal after 88 minutes, and Nicolas Ibanez added a fifth goal right before the end of regulation to complete the blowout.
