At the age of 70, the Swedish musician Lasse Wellander passed dead from cancer. On his official Facebook page, the family of Lasse Wellander announced his passing on Good Friday (April 7). He was well-known for being the guitarist and a member of the ABBA band, which was active in the 1970s and 1980s.
The family of Wellander wrote the following on Facebook:
“We must inform you with unspeakable regret that our dear Lasse has passed away. Recently, Lasse became unwell with what was later determined to be spread cancer; he went away early on Good Friday, surrounded by his loved ones.”
According to Wellander’s relatives, he was a wonderful musician and a kind person. They also described him as a wonderful father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and spouse, as well as a kind, secure, loving, and caring individual. The conclusion of the statement read:
“It’s unfathomable that we now have to survive without you because you were a focal point in our life. We adore you and miss you terribly. Andreas, Ludvig, and Lena.”
Tommy Denander, an ABBA guitarist, composer, and record producer, also shared his sorrow on Facebook by uploading a photo and noting that Lasse worked on most of the band’s albums and played in the live ensemble when they went on extensive tours. Lasse Wellander was praised by Denander as a “wonderful musician” and a “kind man.” He said that Lasse had a profound impact on him.

Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad created ABBA in Stockholm in 1972. The remaining band members contributed to the group’s live performances and recordings.

As the band started tracking Intermezzo No. 1 and Crazy World in October 1974, LasseWellander joined the group for their very first session. He then joined the band on tour, which lasted until 1980.
From an early age, Wellander began playing the guitar and performed with groups including Peps & Blues Quality. Later, he worked with ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. In addition to Zkiffz, Little Mike and the Sweet Soul Music Band, Stockholm All Stars, Low Budget Blues Band, and Vikings, he also performed with a number of other bands.
He wrote the music for movies including Jack, Mamma Mia!, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, ABBA: The Movie, and many others. With albums like Electrocuted, Whole Hand, Poker Face, From Rickfors to Peterson-Berger, and others, he pursued a solo career. Out of the Shadows, Out Into the Wide Sea, Anitra’s Dancing, Guitarism, Overdrive, and more singles were also released by him.
