Joel stated during a news conference on Thursday that it was “hard to believe we’ve been able to do this for ten years.” “I’m now 74. Next year, I’ll be 75. It seems to be a pretty number.
“I’m kind of flabbergasted that it lasted as long as it did,” he continued. “My team says we could keep selling tickets for 10 years and 150 shows, but enough already!”
In January 2014, Joel began his record-breaking residency by performing one show every month at the Manhattan venue for “as long as the demand continues.” Since he started, every show has been sold out.
A new banner was raised to the Garden’s rafters in January 2015 in honour of Joel breaking his own record for the “most consecutive performances by any artist” during the residency’s 13th performance.
With his 65th lifetime performance in July 2015, Joel set a new record for “most lifetime performances by any artist,” for which a new banner was unfurled. At the Garden, both of Joel’s banners are still in place.
The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, remarked, “There’s only one thing more New York than Billy Joel, and that’s a Billy Joel concert at MSG.” “Billy’s music has shaped our city and bonded us for more than 50 years. Congratulations Billy on a record-breaking run of sold-out performances at MSG on behalf of 8.5 million New Yorkers, and thank you for a lifetime of providing joy to all of us.
Joel was the inaugural headlining act at Madison Square Garden in 1978. He has had 33 Top 40 singles, four No. 1 albums (52nd Street, Glass Houses, Storm Front, and River of Dreams), and three No. 1 singles (It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me, We Didn’t Start the Fire, and Tell Her About It).
