Atiq Ahmed murder : The 50 seconds of terror in Prayagraj, when Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot and killed after emerging from a police jeep while being encircled by officers, will permanently tarnish the reputation of the state with the largest police force in the nation, Uttar Pradesh.
Without a doubt, Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf were feared gangsters who ruled wildly for many years. In comparison to Ashraf, who had 57 complaints against him, Atiq Ahmed had 101 cases. Additionally, they must have had hostile adversaries or maybe inspired widespread hatred. However, because the court had placed them in police custody, it was the police’s responsibility to protect their safety. Atiq Ahmed was a lifer as well.
Atiq Ahmed murder: UP Police’s reputation will be forever marred
Ajmal Kasab, a feared terrorist who participated in the Mumbai 26/11 attacks, was given top-notch security after being apprehended alive and was kept in custody for over four years until his death sentence was carried out following the Supreme Court’s ruling. India takes great pleasure in the excellent standards of its judicial system. This is in contrast to the picture of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf being shot at while they were chained together in a single set of handcuffs and laying motionless on the ground.
By the way, no heads have yet fallen. When the shooting started, the roughly ten police officers in charge of security could be seen running for cover. Despite having weaponry, they didn’t fire a single shot.
According to UP cops sources, journalists who were recording the words of Atiq and Ashraf may have perished if the cops had opened fire in retaliation. According to them, cops really did well by showing “restraint”.
According to police sources, journalists are not often frisked or searched, and the three assailants brought a microphone and a camera to get close to Atiq and Ashraf. They also point out how swiftly the three assailants were apprehended. However, the images show that the assailants themselves discarded their handguns before giving themselves up by raising their hands. They obviously conducted a retreat since they observed media teams pursuing and openly accessing Atiq Ahmed while he was being held by police.
The UP Police’s efficiency is called into doubt when two accused, who have even gone to the Supreme Court alleging a threat to their lives, are taken for a medical checkup late at night and under sparse supervision.

The Umesh Pal case and the Atiq Ahmed -Ashraf murder are the second significant murders that have occurred under the tenure of the Prayagraj Commissioner of Police. However, no deadline has been established as of yet.
A three-person judicial committee of investigation has been established, and they have two months to produce a report. The same, one hopes, will solve accountability. Although a series of gruesome killings has the potential to instill fear among civilians, the UP Police has so far appeared to be too busy celebrating itself to do anything about it.
Concern should be expressed about the three assailants’ confidence in their ability to carry out such a heinous act in the face of law enforcement and the media.
