According to Bret Hart, he persuaded Vince McMahon to employ the WWE icon.

Bret Hart recently remembered how Vince McMahon, the executive chairman of WWE, had turned down the chance to sign Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Three months after Eric Bischoff dismissed Austin from WCW, Austin made his ECW debut in September 1995. Before joining WWE in December 1995, the Texan Rattlesnake made a brief appearance in ECW.

Hart expressed his anger at McMahon in an interview with The Classic for Casual Conversations, complaining that Austin had not been hired right away.

“I was one of the individuals that requested Vince to see if he could get Steve Austin in only a few weeks before he (Austin) signed with WWF [WWE]. Then I recall entering and saying, “I just heard he signed with ECW,” and I was sort of pissed with Vince and other guys for missing out on him.”

Austin’s brief stint at ECW is mainly recognised for the humorous ads he produced featuring prominent WCW figures like Bischoff and Hulk Hogan. Before signing a contract with WWE, he participated in two ECW World Championship contests.

Steve Austin was rebranded as The Ringmaster, a skilled wrestler, after joining WWE. On December 18, 1995, he defeated Matt Hardy in his first match; however, the fight was not shown until the RAW programme of January 15, 1996.

Bret Hart was taken aback when Austin was hired by Vince McMahon as a result of his complaint. The Hitman also provided information on a chat he had with his old boss:

“I remember coming in and thinking, ‘Finally, he made it,’ and I believe I had a big part in trying to get him in,” Hart added. “They passed on him. I asked Vince, “How could you let Steve Austin go?” They went and got him and signed him, he said, “Steve Austin?” “He signed with ECW.”” [8:08 – 8:29]

Hart beat Austin in a No Disqualification Submission match at WrestleMania 13 in March 1997. The arduous match is regarded as one of the finest in wrestling history.
