Met Gala 2023: The A-list attendees were requested to dress in attire that honoured the German fashion designer, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 85, for the event’s theme this year.
From 1983 until his passing in 2005, Lagerfeld was the creative director of Chanel. In his memory, many Met Gala guests wore timeless looks from the French fashion company.
Others, however, preferred to make reference to Lagerfeld’s adored cat Choupette, who was as closely associated with the German designer’s style as his sunglasses and white hair ponytail.
The greatest night in the fashion calendar was unfortunately not attended by Choupette herself, although she apologised in an Instagram post.
The cat stated, “Many people offered me to walk the Met Gala red carpet in honour of Daddy [Lagerfeld], but we opted to stay calmly and comfortably at home.
We have honoured my father ever since he passed away, so we are moved to see another day set aside in his honour.
Here are some of this year’s Met Gala’s most striking outfits.
Your red carpet appearance almost takes care of itself when you go by Doja Cat and are asked to honour a guy who adored his cat.
The American rapper did not disappoint, dressing in a robe with cat ears and donning face prosthetics to make herself look more feline-like.
She accessorised her sparkling silver Oscar de la Renta dress, which had a dramatic ruffled train, with some similarly sparkling jewels.
Everyone has had that awful scenario where they arrive at work and realise they are dressed exactly like a coworker.
We thus feel for Irish actor Barry Keoghan and Nigerian musician Burna Boy, both of whom attended the Met Gala wearing startlingly identical chequered blue Burberry attire.
Fair enough, both of them looked fantastic, and we commend male celebrities who choose a pop of colour on the red carpet over the traditional black tuxedo.
The rapper arrived decked up in one of the night’s most ambitious and outlandish ensembles, complete with matching metallic thong, body paint and diamonds that sparkled in the light.
Fans noticed that his jewel-encrusted eye mask also had beaded whiskers, which was likely another allusion to Lagerfeld’s cat.
To drive home the point, Lil Nas X merely meowed and waved his claws in response to inquiries from reporters as he was being questioned on the red carpet.
Last year, Ortega attended the Met Gala in a vivid pink Valentino gown, but this year, she opted for a noticeably eerie and more gothic look.
In addition to fitting the Lagerfeld style, Ortega’s gloomy costume also alluded to her breakout performance in Wednesday, the enormously popular Addams family spinoff on Netflix.

Recently, Ortega admitted to InStyle that the role had influenced her personal style. “I do think that Wednesday changed my taste a lot,” she said. I struggle to remove her from me, at least in terms of clothing.

Actor Jared Leto has a reputation for pulling off some of the wackiest outfits at the Met Gala, but this year he truly outdid himself.
The Oscar winner arrived looking just like a cat. I’m done now. There isn’t much else we can add at this point.
We’re fortunate that he chose to take off his enormous cat head when posing for pictures because else, we would not have recognised him.
