Tom Holland After experiencing a “tough time” and “a bit of a meltdown” while working on his most recent film, Tom Holland says he is taking a year off from acting to take care of his mental health.
Tom Holland is taking a year off from acting
The Crowded Room, which he both created and featured in, is an Apple TV+ thriller series that the 27-year-old British actor is presently promoting. Tom Holland portrays a character that is partially based on Billy Milligan, known as “the Campus Rapist” in the United States, who claimed to have 24 different identities and was the first person to be judged not guilty by reason of insanity based on a dissociative identity disorder diagnosis.
Tom Holland claimed in an interview with Extra on Wednesday that he had “loved the learning curve of becoming a producer” but that balancing those duties while portraying a character with serious mental illness had pushed him too far.
I’m used to working hard, he added. “I have always believed that hard work pays off. However, the programme did ruin me. There was a moment when I felt like I needed a break and I travelled to Mexico for a week to relax on a beach. The difficulty of this show led me to decide to take a year off. I am eager to see the outcome. I believe that our efforts weren’t in vain.
It was undoubtedly a difficult period, he continued. “We were discussing certain emotions that I had never before experienced. Additionally, dealing with the day-to-day issues that arise on any film set as a producer merely added an additional layer of pressure.
Tom Holland admitted that The Crowded Room had made it difficult for him to break free from the character, and that he had even pondered shaving his head to “get rid” of the persona.

“In my own life, I started recognising myself in him. I can recall having a small breakdown at home and declaring, “I’m going to shave my head.” I need to get rid of this character, so I need to shave my head,” he stated. I chose not to because we were plainly in the middle of shooting. I had never experienced anything like it before.
“I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job, doing the whole action-movie thing,” he continued. It took me a long time to heal and sort of return to reality later, but the mental aspect really knocked me up.
Tom Holland has previously discussed his efforts to safeguard his mental health while in the public eye, including abstaining from alcohol and social media. He claimed that watching the show had improved his understanding of his mental health and helped him “recognise triggers” and “things that stress me out.”
He admitted in 2021 that he was thinking of completely giving up acting, adding, “I don’t even sure if I want to be an actor… I’d like to go and do other things because I started acting when I was 11 and haven’t done anything else since. At the age of 25, I’m experiencing what can be considered a pre-midlife crisis.
In The Crowded Room, Tom Holland co-stars with Amanda Seyfried. On Friday, Apple TV+ will debut the Akiva Goldsman-penned television series.
