The Kevin Costner-starring Western “Yellowstone,” which is now airing its third season, will end after this one, Paramount confirmed on Friday.
A new “Yellowstone” sequel, produced by Taylor Sheridan like the first, will start in December to follow the series, which airs on the Paramount Network. The follow-up will premiere on the cable channel Paramount Network and subsequently on the Paramount+ streaming service.
The president and chief executive of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, which produces “Yellowstone” along with 101 Studios, said in a statement that its final episodes would begin airing in November, “‘Yellowstone’ has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits.”
Yellowstone
One of the most popular television programmes is “Yellowstone,” which follows the story of the Duttons, a wealthy and boisterous ranching family in Montana led by patriarch John Dutton (Costner). With more than 13 million viewers, its Season 4 finale was the most viewed scripted programme in 2022, according to Variety. According to Paramount, the Season 5 premiere in November 2017 surpassed it with more than 17 million viewers.
When “Yellowstone” was cancelled, there were news claims that there had been conflict between Costner and the show’s producers and that he would not be returning after this season.
“Yellowstone” has occasionally been referred to as television’s “red-state hit,” a description that some reviewers have found too simple. The New York Times quoted Sheridan as saying in 2019 that “The people who are calling it a red-state show have probably never watched it.” But since it tells tales from a region of America that is neglected in Hollywood programming, it has drawn notice.

Its popularity in the South and the centre of the country, according to data published by Paramount earlier in its run, may have contributed to its success. However, a dynamic Friday’s statement hinted to the show’s larger demographic reach when it noted its “passionate audience from the middle of the country to each of the coasts.”
Sheridan was best known as a screenwriter before he became one of TV’s most prolific producers; his script for the Western feature picture “Hell or High Water” was nominated for an Academy Award in 2017. His other television projects, which air on Paramount+, include the criminal dramas “Tulsa King” (with Sylvester Stallone and Faith Hill), “Mayor of Kingstown” (Jeremy Renner), and the “Yellowstone” prequels “1883” and “1923” (including the real-life pair Tim McGraw and Faith Hill).
In the announcement, McCarthy expressed his confidence that the untitled sequel will be “another big hit.”
