This month, Amazon Prime Video hasn’t slacked off on introducing new films. Because to its regularly excellent choice of films, Prime Video has already been named one of the greatest streaming services; May is maintaining that tradition.
In fact, one of my favourite films of the year thus far has just arrived on Prime Video this month. Additionally, it features two Hollywood powerhouses in the form of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Affleck also served as the film’s director.
Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson, two renowned filmmakers, have modern classics on Prime Video’s May release schedule. Additionally, one of the films on this list lets you view Jason Segel’s naked butt! I’m not sure whether that’s really a selling point, but it occurs several times during the film.
Here are my top seven suggestions for films to see this month on Amazon’s streaming service if you’re searching for something new to watch. All of these films might make a compelling argument for inclusion in our list of the greatest films on Prime Video.
Air (2023)
Prime Video The Social Network and Moneyball are just a couple of the films that have a theoretically uninteresting premise yet end up being really entertaining. Air is another example of this. This sports drama, which Ben Affleck directed, was only recently released in theatres, and it is already a lock to be one of the finest films of the year.
The lighthearted movie depicts the real-life events of Nike’s attempts to court young basketball star Michael Jordan and persuade him to sign a deal with them rather than Adidas. Although seeing Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) struggle to put together a presentation for the sports no-nonsense mother (the consistently brilliant Viola Davis) is immensely engrossing, it may not seem like the most interesting premise for a movie on paper.

Additionally, Sonny needs to persuade his hesitant employer Phil Knight (Affleck) and workmate Rob Strasser (Jason Bateman) that Jordan is worthwhile of their time and money. The cooperation that resulted naturally gave rise to the Air Jordan, one of the most recognisable sneakers in history, and the film does a fantastic job of highlighting its beginnings.
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Prime Video A Beautiful Mind won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted, and Best Supporting Actor at the 74th Academy Awards. Russell Crowe was nominated for Best Actor for his major role as renowned mathematician John Nash.
The opening scene of A Beautiful Mind, which was based on Sylvia Nasar’s book of the same name, shows the bright but uncomfortable Nash arriving at Princeton University in 1947. A few years later, the Pentagon seeks Nash’s assistance in analysing encrypted telecommunications after recognising his genius. However, as his fascination with this top-secret task deepens, he starts to believe that he is being watched and that evil forces could be pursuing him.
Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, and Paul Bettany are also outstanding in the film’s strong cast list, while Christopher Plummer plays a psychiatrist named Dr. Rosen who tries to assist Nash manage his disturbed mind. Prime Video Crowe is by no means the sole star. A Beautiful Mind may initially appear to be cheap Oscar bait, but it’s actually far more.
She Said (2022)
Prime Video She Said, which is based on the same-named book, describes how the New York Times investigation revealed decades of sexual misbehaviour and assault by well-known Hollywood product Harvey Weinstein.
The focus of the movie is on two adamant journalists named Jodi Kantor (Carey Mulligan) and Megan Twohey (Zoe Kazan), who put in a lot of effort to expose Weinstein’s misdeeds and make sure the women he exploited had a voice. It’s all really potent material, and it serves as a poignant and timely reminder to pay attention to and take victims of sexual assault at their word.
Mulligan and Kazan serve as the movie’s strong leads, and director Maria Schrader does a fantastic job of making the phone conversations used to gather quotes feel as stressful as any big-budget action sequence. Additionally, Mike Houston deserves praise for portraying the challenging character of Weinstein. She Said is a compelling film that everyone should see, despite not being the most enjoyable to watch on our list.
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)
Prime Video Ted Logan, a naive high school kid who, together with his best buddy Bill (Alex Winter), uses a phone booth-shaped time machine to travel back in time and collect a cast of historical people for a history class performance, is Keanu Reeve’s finest role ever. Forget John Wick or Neo.
This outrageous science fiction comedy combines absurdist humour with two very likeable lead characters. The film more than lives up to its moniker, delivering a truly fantastic experience in which the two encounter a variety of well-known people, including Napoleon Bonaparte, Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln, and even Socrates.
The film is essentially as stupid as it sounds, but it is also really sincere and pleasantly self-aware. Two years later, in 1991, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey would be produced. This was followed by the eagerly awaited third film, Bill & Ted Face the Music, which was released in 2020 but didn’t quite reach the same heights as the most great original.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
Prime Video One of the most consistently funny comedy films of the 2000s, Forgetting Sarah Marshall sees Jason Segel play Peter Bretter, a composer for a popular crime drama show that stars the titular Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). Oh, and Peter’s also been dating Sarah for five years, and she just dumped him to date a British Rockstar (Russell Brand) instead.
Flying to Hawaii in an effort to escape his heartbreak, Peter winds up at the same resort that Sarah is staying at with her new rocker beau. It’s a situation ripe for comedy, and the film gets great mileage out of some truly toe-curlingly uncomfortable situations. Alongside the excellent leads is a top-class supporting cast of very funny people including Mila Kunis, Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, Jack McBrayer and Paul Rudd.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall, one of the constantly humorous comedies from the 2000s, stars Kristen Bell as the title character and Jason Segel as Peter Bretter, the show’s composer. Oh, and Sarah has been seeing Peter for five years as well. She recently broke up with him so that she may date a British rock star (Russell Brand).
Shutter Island (2010)
Prime Video It can be hard to stand out in a résumé as outstanding as Martin Scorsese’s, but with to its spine-tingling tension and deftly constructed mystery, Shutter Island manages to rank as one of the legendary director’s most gripping pictures.
A U.S. Marshall called Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his sidekick Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) arrive to a facility for the criminally ill on the movie’s titular island in 1954. Their task is to look into a patient’s mysterious disappearance in the middle of the night, but the two soon come to believe that Shutter Island is not what it seems and that mysterious psychiatrist Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley) may be concealing sinister information.
A convoluted story that will keep you wondering right up to the very end For fear of giving anything away before you see, I won’t say anything more about Shutter Island other than to suggest that it’s a must-see for thriller enthusiasts.
Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Prime Video In Moonrise Kingdom, a Wes Anderson classic, a little boy flees his scouting post in order to reunite with his pen buddy, a young girl with violent tendencies, on the made-up island of New Penzance. In response, the police captain of the island calls together a search team to seek for the fugitives, and the island’s colourful residents lend a hand in the search.
Moonrise Kingdom has a fantastic ensemble, including some of Wes Anderson’s favourite collaborators, as you could expect from a movie by him. Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and, of course, Jason Schwartzman all provide outstanding performances in this. It’s also important to note Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman’s debut roles as the two runaway children in a feature picture.
The ideal moment to rewatch one of Anderson’s finest works to date is right now, since his most recent film, Asteroid City, is set to enter theatres next month. A singular director at the height of his abilities, Moonrise Kingdom was influenced by his own childhood visions.
