There is no proof, according to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, that the four kids who went missing when their plane crashed in the jungle more than two weeks ago have been found.

Colombia plane crash

In the jungle, search teams have discovered things and a temporary shelter that they believe belonged to the missing youngsters.

They have come to assume that since the crash, the kids have been lost and wandering alone in the rainforest because of this.

However, Mr. Petro claimed that it was impossible to verify the details of their rescue.

The children, whose ages vary from 13 to 11 months, were onboard the small plane that crashed on May 1 along with their mother, the pilot, and the co-pilot.

In the collision, every adult perished.

The president himself broke the story of the supposed rescue of the kids on Wednesday afternoon local time when he tweeted that they had been discovered “after arduous search efforts.”

But less than a day after posting it, he withdrew it and said: “I have decided to delete the tweet because the information provided by the ICBF (Colombia’s child protection organisation) could not be corroborated. I apologise for what occurred. To deliver the news the nation is praying for, the military forces and indigenous people will continue their tireless quest.

The president’s since-deleted tweet, according to a statement from Colombia’s child protection agency, was based on data that agency had supplied.

In a statement, it claimed to have learned “from the pitch” that the kids had been discovered to be in good health.

Astrid Cáceres, the organization’s director, said on Thursday morning’s Colombian radio that the information came from “reliable sources” and that the persons who contacted them had given a description of the children’s looks, which matched the descriptions of the missing youngsters.

Ms. Cáceres claimed that her organisation had yet to be able to visit the kids and that the search operation would not end until that time.

The child welfare organisation was not the only one to report receiving information that the four kids had been saved.

A pilot said that he had also been informed that the kids had been discovered by natives in the heart of the rainforest.

However, soldiers involved in the search claimed that “due to the difficult meteorological conditions and the difficult terrain” they themselves had not yet been able to get in touch with the kids.

On May 1, the Cessna 206 light aircraft carrying the kids and their mother vanished while on route from Araracuara, a remote Amazon jungle town in southern Colombia, to San José del Guaviare.

The pilot had earlier reported experiencing engine issues.

Two weeks after it vanished, the jet was ultimately found after a massive search operation involving more than 100 soldiers.

At the crash site in the province of Caquetá, the bodies of the pilot, the co-pilot, and Magdalena Mucutuy, 33, the mother of the four children, were discovered.

However, the kids were nowhere to be seen.

However, the search teams have discovered evidence suggesting that the indigenous Huitoto youngsters survived the collision.

Sniffer dogs found a child’s water bottle, some half-eaten fruit, scissors, and a hair tie.

A hastily constructed shelter comprised of wood and branches was also discovered by the search teams.

“We believe that the children on the plane are still alive. Colonel Juan José López stated on Wednesday, “We have located traces at a separate location, away from the crash site, and a place where they may have sheltered.

The military sent out helicopters that played a message from the children’s grandmother in the Huitoto language pleading with them to stay put because they were worried that the kids were straying deeper and deeper into the jungle.

On Wednesday, rumours about the children’s sightings began to circulate.

The local airline Avianline, which operated the wrecked aircraft, issued a statement confirming that it had heard that the kids had been located.

One of its pilots who landed in Cachiporro, a neighbourhood close to the crash site, was informed that residents there had been informed via radio that the kids had been located in a rural area named Dumar. He informed them that they would travel to Cachiporro via boat.

Despite the fact that the corporation had no way of verifying whether the information was accurate, it did mention that severe rains may have delayed the children’s arrival by boat since they made the river too risky to travel.

The youngsters had been located by a local and were being brought by river to Cachiporro, according to indigenous radio stations that broadcast on Wednesday.

The father of the kids has stated that he is still holding out hope. He revealed to Caracol Radio that his sister had previously spent a month missing in the woods but was eventually found.

The young children are believed to have had a greater chance of survival due to the Huitoto people’s understanding of fruits and forest survival techniques.
