On “The Idol,” Lily-Rose Depp said she “would steer clear” of the Weeknd. There were several stressful moments, but no one “went full method” or “lost their minds.”

Lily-Rose Depp plays a young pop sensation in HBO’s contentious new drama “The Idol,” who develops feelings for Tedros, a self-help guru and contemporary cult leader played by Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. No one in the cast of “The Idol” went “full Method [actor],” according to Depp’s recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, but that doesn’t mean some of them didn’t go at least partially. At least, that is how it sounds.

Nobody, according to Depp, “went full method; I don’t think they lost their minds.” Well, occasionally when Abel would get — I don’t want to give away too much about Abel’s character, but on those occasions when he would go full Tedros, I would avoid him. He’s in his zone right now, I’d think.

The Weeknd said last month that being in Tedros’ brain during the filming of “The Idol” had an effect on his singing in the real world. He had to end a show in Los Angeles last September because he couldn’t speak.

The musician explained, “I had to change out of the Weeknd clothing, put on Tedros’s wig, shoot with Jocelyn, then go back to being the Weeknd. Going from one head to another was challenging. Then, following the show, my voice failed me. There was no voice at all. Never before has such occurred.

Despite the fact that “The Idol” obviously explores some serious themes, Depp insisted to Entertainment Weekly that “the attitude on site was fairly cheerful,” adding, “We’re all really good friends and we’re all similar individuals so we truly understand each other. That kind of energy made the darker moments easier and doable because we were laughing a lot, listening to music, and dancing.

The first two episodes of “The Idol” had their global premieres at the Cannes Film Festival. The show received a five-minute standing ovation, but criticism erupted over its explicit sex and nudity.

Lily-Rose remarked to ET Canada about the Cannes premiere, “I had never viewed it with a [large] audience before. “But it was amazing. It seemed like the perfect climax of everything we had been through together and like a wonderful process that was depicted in the programme as we built this little family. It was just so nice.
