Knicks’ Game 6 loss to the Miami Heat eliminated them from the playoffs.

The New York Knicks’ season, which had low expectations to begin with but developed into what some fans dubbed the team’s most thrilling run in more than 20 years, came to an end Friday night with a 96-92 loss to the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

As the game looked to be slipping away, Jalen Brunson continuously scored, almost carrying the Knicks to victory. He was the top scorer with 41 points. However, Brunson’s teammates had trouble; RJ Barrett and Julius Randle combined for 26 points on 4 of 24 shooting. With 24 points, Jimmy Butler led the Heat.

As soon as he took his seat for the postgame news conference, Barrett admitted his terrible performance. He remarked, “Wow,” before turning to the media after looking somberly at his statistics in a printed box score that was on a table in front of him.

“I performed poorly. I don’t feel like I played my best today, so it hurts, but it’s nice to have experiences like this, you learn from it, said Barrett, who added: “You want something so bad, and I personally don’t feel like I played my best, so it hurts.”

The Heat’s victory over the No. 1 seed in the East and N.B.A. title favourites, the Milwaukee Bucks, in the opening round gave the New York Knicks hope of reaching the Eastern Conference finals. The fourth-seeded Cavaliers, a quality team headed by guard Donovan Mitchell, had just been upset by the fifth-seeded Knicks. The Heat, the No. 8 seed, did not have guard Tyler Herro, who averaged 20.1 points per game during the regular season but injured his hand against the Bucks, in their second-round lineup.

The gap between these two squads, though, became apparent once the Knicks’ series against Miami got underway: Butler, a standout player for the Heat, has the ability to virtually will his team to victory whenever he wants. Not the Knicks.

They absolutely did not play like an eight seed, according to Brunson. They are wonderful.

The majority of NBA fans have probably become accustomed to seeing Butler step up his performance in the postseason, and this postseason he has done the same. With his high-scoring games and outstanding defensive play, he destroyed the Knicks. Going into Game 6, he was scoring 24.8 points, dishing out 6.5 assists, and grabbing 7.0 rebounds per game against the Knicks.

Butler, a six-time All-Star, frequently performs at that level during the regular season but has led a team that includes undrafted players who many casual N.B.A. fans might have to Google in order to know who they are.

On the other side, the Knicks’ top players, Brunson and Randle, have alternated between appearing unprepared for this level of play and strong enough to carry this club to the Eastern Conference finals. Having shooting 0 for 7 from outside the arc in the first game of this series, Brunson admitted his shortcomings and called himself “horrific.”

Randle, the lone All-Star pick for the Knicks this season who was selected for an all-NBA team, did not appear like that guy throughout these playoffs. Prior to Game 6, he was only averaging 16.8 points and 8 rebounds in the playoffs, much behind his double-double average of 25.1 points and 10.0 rebounds per game during the regular season. While Randle is recovering from an ankle injury that kept him out of Game 1 against the Heat, his previous postseason troubles are cause for concern.

Two seasons earlier, when the Knicks last made the playoffs, Randle once again had a standout regular season, making his first All-Star team and averaging a double-double with 24.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Despite averaging 37.3 points in the three regular-season meetings between the clubs — his most against any opponent — he struggled in the first round of the playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks, scoring 18.0 points and pulling down 11.6 rebounds on average. In just five games, the Hawks defeated the Knicks.

Randle questioned the team’s motivation after the Knicks fell behind the Heat 3-1 in this series.

Randle’s reaction to a query regarding the Knicks’ subpar offensive rebounding and lack of aggressiveness in pursuing loose balls was, “Maybe they want it more,” he replied. “I’m not sure. We’ve been that way all season, and if we want to salvage this season, we have to figure out how to step up and make those plays.

In response, the Knicks defeated the Heat in Game 5 by holding them off in a game when Brunson appeared to be the greatest player on either team.

Even though the Knicks’ defeat on Friday was particularly painful since it appeared they might have gone further in the playoffs, they still outperformed expectations this year, and performances like Brunson’s in Game 5 show that they may have some promising moving forward.

The Knicks finished 11th in the East last year, and coach Tom Thibodeau and Randle’s futures were in doubt. As per usual, the Knicks failed to sign any of the top free agents and passed over trading for Mitchell, who said he believed the Jazz would send him to the Knicks rather than the Cavaliers. Instead, the Knicks chose to sign former Dallas guard Brunson, and that decision cost them a second-round selection in 2025 due to tampering.

Due to Brunson and Randle’s dynamic duo, the Knicks have emerged as one of the NBA’s most unexpected teams this season. To some who have questioned the Knicks’ choice to pass on Mitchell in a trade, defeating Mitchell’s club in the first round was somewhat of a message.

Teddy Foran, 24, a native of Stamford, Connecticut, claimed during Game 1 against the Heat that “we are playing with house money” because he is in this place. While growing up and watching games with his father, he developed a love for the Knicks.

“What we did in the off-season by keeping the young core was great,” he continued. avoiding selling out for Donovan, as you can see, doing so will result in a first-round loss in five. So you know it’s okay if we lose the second round.

As Brunson and Randle led the Knicks on their longest postseason run since 2013, when they also lost in the second round, many supporters had assembled and celebrated on Seventh Avenue following victories. In 1999 and 2000, respectively, the squad last advanced to the NBA championships and conference finals. However, it’s possible that the Knicks have finally done enough to attract the headline great players they have been vying for and missing out on every offseason.

Regarding playing in Madison Square Garden, which coach described as the best arena in the NBA, Thibodeau remarked, “We recognise how blessed we are. “I hope we do them proud. We offer everything we have, and if occasionally we fall short, we always get back up.
