After 47 years in the league, the Denver Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat 94-89 on Monday night to claim their first NBA title.

The Nuggets overcame a 10-point deficit in the second quarter under the leadership of two-time NBA MVP Nikola Joki to win the series 4-1. In the closing minutes, the Heat looked poised to mount a comeback of their own, but a costly error by Miami’s Jimmy Butler allowed Denver to score vital free throws.

Joki, who finished the game with 28 points and 16 rebounds, remarked in an on-court interview after winning the championship, “The job is done, we can go home now.” After averaging 30.2 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 7.2 assists throughout the course of the series, he was also voted the MVP of the finals. The Serbian All-Star, selected in the second round of the 2014 draught, made history by becoming the player with the lowest draught position to earn a finals MVP. Denver’s championship puts him in the debate for one of the greatest NBA centres of all time.

In the finals, his teammate Jamal Murray, who missed the whole 2021–22 season due to an ACL tear, averaged 21.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 10.0 assists per game.

Murray replied, “I thought this was going to happen long before we got here. “That’s when I saw it,” the player said. “I had a belief of being in the playoffs before, having the experience, seeing the squad and the relationship evolve, and having the same core throughout my career. I started to believe it then.

“Being here just kind of brings it all together and demonstrates that, God willing, when the appropriate conditions exist and everyone is healthy, we are capable of achieving our goals. I believe that we are a very difficult team to stop when we are playing our best basketball.

Game 5’s Nuggets effort was far from their best. Before outscoring the Heat by 12 points in the second half, they missed 20 of their first 22 three-point attempts and seven of their first 13 free throws. The Heat also displayed faulty radar, shooting 34% from the pitch and 25% from beyond the arc.

With 2:45 remaining in the game, Butler’s side was down by seven points and the Heat held a lead of 87-86 thanks to his string of eight consecutive points. With 1:58 left, he added two more free throws to help Miami retake the lead. The Nuggets then took the lead permanently after Bruce Brown’s tip-in off an offensive rebound. Butler attempted a three-point shot with 15 seconds remaining and missed it because of a three-point deficit. Brown sank two free throws to end the contest and give Denver its first championship.

We struggled to make shots and it was unpleasant, but in the end we worked it out, according to Joki. “I am just happy that we won the game.”

Michael Malone, the coach of the Nuggets, instantly set his sights on his young team, which consists of Murray, 24, Joki 28, Michael Porter Jr., 24, and Aaron Gordon, 27, winning more championships. As he addressed the audience from the winner’s platform, Malone stated, “I’ve got news for everyone out there.” “One is not enough for us.”

Denver qualified for the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and had appeared like the league’s best team for the most of the season. In contrast, the young Heat beat the odds to earn a spot in the NBA finals as the No. 8 seed.

Following Denver’s victory, the 10 current teams remaining without an NBA title are Phoenix, Utah, Brooklyn, Orlando, Indiana, Charlotte, Memphis, Minnesota, New Orleans, and the Los Angeles Clippers.
