Scarlett Johansson The MCU has been active for so long that several actors have joined and left it by this point. Some actors, like Chris Evans, have taken a temporary break from acting because Captain America is still in existence. However, some, like Robert Downey Jr., have taken a permanent retirement.
There are now a few more names on this list of actors who have officially retired. Scarlett Johansson and Zoe Saldana have stated that they will no longer play their respective Marvel personas. What about Secret Wars, though? Will they return for appearances in the biggest crossover event in Marvel comics? Two factors will determine that.
One must anticipate that numerous performers and their roles will come and go when a franchise lasts for over 15 years. In 2021, Scarlett Johansson made her final MCU appearance. It’s reasonable to assume that Black Widow won’t be making a comeback because the movie was a prequel and her character passed away in 2019.
Johansson struck the last nail in Natasha Romanoff’s coffin by announcing that she was finally through with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an interview with Gwyneth Paltrow on The Goop Podcast. She uttered:

“I’m through. This chapter is complete. I think I completed what I needed to. A truly unique experience is returning and playing the same character over the course of a decade. Kevin Feige is a huge fan of film and narrative. He genuinely likes him. I had just turned 26. It was enjoyable being single.
Should we therefore assume that she won’t make a comeback in Avengers: Secret Wars as Natasha Romanoff? Although Natasha on Earth in 1999 died, many believed that she might return in a different form during Secret Wars. Now, though, that seems incredibly implausible.
Along with Johansson, Zoe Saldaa also revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that her tenure in the MCU would come to an end with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. She uttered:
“I don’t believe this to be the Guardians’ demise. It’s the end for Gamora and me.
She did, however, mention that although if Gamora’s time in the MCU is up, she hopes that the character will be recast so that it may continue to motivate a new generation of Marvel watchers. But it remains to be seen if she will reconsider returning in Secret Wars.
When discussing their upcoming movie roles, MCU actors aren’t afraid to tell lies. Despite repeatedly denying it, Andrew Garfield played the “Werewolf” in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Similarly, we cannot rely on Scarlett Johansson or Zoe Saldana’s word since they would be bound by contract to keep their upcoming MCU roles a secret.
Secret Wars is still too far in the future for any contracts to be signed, though. Therefore, even if Johansson and Saldaa are being completely honest, they might change their minds once Marvel starts casting for the upcoming crossover. Even yet, Black Widow and Gamora might always make a comeback as variations with different actors portraying the part if these two actresses don’t want to.
