TWISTED METAL Given the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie and the enormous popularity of HBO Max’s The Last of Us, it is not surprising that networks, studios, and streamers are all vying for a piece of the video game adaptation market. To deliver Twisted Metal in front of audiences this summer, Peacock appears to be physically racing ahead of the competition.
Twisted Metal, which is based on the venerable PlayStation series of the same name, appears to be the most recent effort to persuade gamers and reviewers alike that the dreaded curse of the video game adaptation has been broken. What can we thus anticipate from this most recent endeavour born from pixels and polygons? This page contains all the information we currently know about Twisted Metal, including plot details, casting news, and the debut date.
The action-packed, extravagant vehicle combat games that make up the long-running PlayStation brand are the inspiration for Twisted Metal. On Sony’s original PlayStation console, the series made its debut in 1995. Since then, numerous sequels and spin-offs have been released.
The 10-episode series, which is officially referred to as a “live-action comedy,” seems to be more inspired by the games than it does a direct translation of one of their tales. It appears the show isn’t holding back on the source material’s brand of mature, violent, high-octane shenanigans based on the teaser trailer, which features star Anthony Mackie reloading his double-barreled death-dealer from behind the wheel of his muscle car, which is outfitted with a pair of mounted machine guns that’d make James Bond envious.
Of course, it’s safe to assume that the series is leaning just as strongly into the games’ dark humour considering that Mackie removes the ammunition from a glove box that is literally overflowing with shotgun rounds, before joyfully revving his motor and jamming out to Len’s “Steal My Sunshine.” We also get a peek of Sweet Tooth, the series’ crazy, ice cream truck-driving murderous clown, after a wide image of Mackie’s vehicle hurtling across a post-apocalyptic landscape.
A motor-mouthed outsider is given a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. While the trailer successfully piqued our interest, and ensured that “Steal My Sunshine” will immediately be added to our Spotify playlists, the series’ official synopsis goes a bit deeper, offering a Mad Max-flavored description of Mackie’s John Doe and his risky quest.
He will encounter violent marauders driving vehicles of devastation and other hazards of the open road, including a crazed clown who drives an all-too-familiar ice cream truck, with the assistance of a badass axe-wielding car thief.
Showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai) addressed how the show will complement its expected elements with a deeper narrative and characterizations in a statement, clearly acknowledging the action-heavy games were a bit light on story: “Yes, Twisted Metal has the cars, it has the weapons, and it has the battles.
However, there are also people there. The people and their motivations will captivate you, no pun intended (well, maybe a little). This crazy drama is about insiders and outsiders, and how our unique catastrophe has made us more estranged and separated than ever. Still, there is hope. You can locate your neighbourhood and your friends. To discover them, you might just need to pass past a menacing clown in an armoured ice cream truck.
Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Haden Church, Will Arnett, and Joe Seanoa are among the cast members of Twisted Metal. Based on his brief appearance in the teaser, Mackie, who portrays protagonist John Doe, appears to be having a fun with the part. There are other “John Doe” characters in the game series, but it’s not clear if Mackie’s interpretation has anything in common with them.
Sweet Tooth, the series’ recognisable villain and type of mascot, is more well-known to fans. It’s interesting to note that the programme will utilise two actors to portray the oversized part, with Will Arnett providing the character’s voice and Joe Seanoa (aka wrestler Samoa Joe) donning the clown suit.
Although the characters are mostly only hinted at in the trailer, Smith provided some additional information about how they’ll be developed in the show:
“You will cheer for our charismatic hero John Doe, played by Anthony Mackie, as he travels through the Divided States of America in search of a place to belong. And you’ll see that Joe Seanoa, better known by his ring name Samoa Joe, who plays our insane, murdering clown Sweet Tooth, has a startling amount of soul.
The personalities of Beatriz and Haden Church, who aren’t in the teaser, were further illuminated by Smith’s depiction.
You’ll chuckle as Stephanie Beatriz, who plays the mysterious Quiet, forces John and her together after an accidental encounter and drastically alters both of their lives. You’ll want to witness our heroes defeat the Thomas Haden Church-played lunatic highway patrolman Agent Stone, who only sees the world in black and blue.
The supporting cast raises further questions. Neve Campbell, Richard Cabral, Mike Mitchell, Tahj Vaughans, and Lou Beatty Jr. will appear as guests, but their specific roles are still unknown.
Twisted Metal is from Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, and it features a strong cast behind the scenes as well. Along with the actors Anthony Mackie and Will Arnett, the writing team behind the Deadpool and Zombieland movie series is executive producing. Smith is the series’ showrunner in addition to being an executive producer and writer. The helm will be handed over to Kitao Sakurai for a few of the episodes.
There won’t be much of a wait for fans of vehicular action, homicidal clowns, and Anthony Mackie’s charming smile. The first of ten 30-minute episodes of Twisted Metal will air on July 27.
